Lead Java Full Stack Engineer with AWS (Backend Focus)

Location: Rockville, MD or McLean, VA - Hybrid

Pay Rate: ./hour on W2

Eligibility : Candidates must be local to DC, Virginia, or Maryland and available for the assessment and onsite interview.

Role Overview

Client is seeking a hands-on Lead Full Stack Engineer to guide the architecture, design, and development of a new application built from the ground up on a fully serverless AWS platform. The role combines technical leadership with active backend development, with a focus on enterprise integrations, high transaction volumes, and large-scale data processing. Front-end expertise is not a priority.

Key Responsibilities

• Own technical direction, architecture, and design decisions for the application.
• Lead backend development using Java and Spring Boot while actively contributing production code.
• Design and implement serverless AWS solutions, including Lambda functions using Python and/or TypeScript.
• Define REST API designs and integration patterns across enterprise applications and services.
• Guide database design, SQL optimization, and approaches to large-scale data processing.
• Design asynchronous messaging and event-driven workflows.
• Address scalability, reliability, and performance requirements for high-throughput systems.
• Provide technical guidance, review code and designs, and support the development team in resolving complex issues.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.

Required Qualifications

• 12+ years of software development experience, including technical leadership and architecture responsibilities.
• Strong hands-on expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
• Strong experience with AWS infrastructure and serverless application architecture.
• Experience with AWS Lambda and working knowledge of Python and/or TypeScript.
• Strong SQL, database design, and performance optimization skills.
• Extensive experience developing REST APIs and integrating enterprise systems.
• Experience designing messaging solutions and asynchronous, event-driven architectures.
• Experience designing and developing scalable systems that handle high transaction volumes or large datasets.
• Ability to lead technical decisions and guide engineers while remaining actively involved in development.

Strong Java developers who can quickly ramp up on Python and/or TypeScript will be considered. This position requires a hands-on technical lead.
